Everything Has Rhythm
You know how the early morning sun brings kind of a magical, golden glow? How when it's early and still quiet outside it seems easier to breathe a little deeper and notice a little more? Some of the trees (around here) still show their warm fall colors and everything takes on a "decorated" presence. You can see the rhythm in Mother Nature's dance.
In recalling Katherine May's lovely book Wintering, she says "Have we really got so far into the realm of electric light and central heating that the rhythm of the year is irrelevant to us, and we no longer even want to notice the point in which the nights start getting shorter again?"
Actually, I think we do want to honor the changes. Most people I've talked to about this agree that it feels "right" to move a little slower and enjoy a cozy fire with a warm drink this time of year.
Winter Solstice....
In recounting her visit to Stonehenge to celebrate the Winter Solstice, May shares "the suggestion that Stonehenge was in fact a Druidic site of worship. Druids follow the eightfold Wheel of the Year, which means we have something to do every six weeks. It's a useful period of time....you always have the next moment in sight. It creates a pattern through the year".
Finding Your Rhythm
As a wellbeing coach I recognize the importance of respecting the "inner-knowingness" we all have. Helping someone find the "right" steps to take to make their dance have the rhythm that works is where the magic lies! And the rhythm changes; perhaps it's our job to do nothing but listen and feel and contemplate; doesn't that sound liberating? And then we notice....the music guides....and we can follow.
As we see the last month of the year slipping by, busy with holiday doings and new year thoughts, let's remember to appreciate the uniqueness that December brings. And maybe take an extra moment to savor that special rhythm that you're hearing....right now.
I'd love to know your thoughts on this~ hit reply and share if you're so inclined.
And if you or someone you know are contemplating coaching, I invite you to a no-obligation conversation call with me. It all starts with an idea!
